Diabetes is the leading cause of death in Mexico, according to the World Health Organization. The disease claims nearly 80,000 lives each year, and experts forecast that this health crisis will continue to grow in the decades ahead.

Rising rates of obesity, combined with a genetic predisposition to Type 2 diabetes, have fueled a steady increase in the condition across Mexico over the past 40 years. Today, approximately 14% of adults—more than 20 million people—are living with diabetes. This growing epidemic places an increasing burden on hospitals, clinics, and families, making prevention, early detection, and education more important than ever.

The Rotary Club of Tulum is committed to improving community health through prevention, early detection, and education. For several years, we have been providing free diabetes screenings, health education, and ongoing support to residents of our community.

Today, we operate two free community diabetes clinics, held weekly and run entirely by dedicated Rotary volunteers. One clinic serves the community of Chemuyil, while the second serves Tulum in partnership with the DIF (Desarrollo Integral de la Familia).

Our clinics provide:

Free blood glucose testing

Blood pressure monitoring

Personalized counseling and education for individuals at risk of diabetes and hypertension

By offering regular screenings and preventive health education, we help local residents identify health risks early, better manage chronic conditions, and make informed lifestyle choices. Consistent testing, follow-up, and counseling are essential components of effective diabetes prevention and management.

The supplies used in our clinics—including glucose meters, test strips, lancets, and other essential materials—have been generously donated by Rotary members and supporters. Their continued generosity allows us to provide these services free of charge to those who need them most.

Together, we are building a healthier future for the communities of Tulum and Chemuyil—one screening, one conversation, and one life at a time.
