DIABETES CLINICS

Diabetes is the leading cause of death in Mexico, according to the World Health Organization. The disease claims nearly 80,000 lives each year, and forecasters say the health problem is expected to get worse in the decades to come.

Rising rates of obesity combined with a genetic predisposition for Type 2 diabetes have caused a slow steady rise in the condition in Mexico over the last 40 years. Now roughly 14 percent of adults in this country of 120 million are living with what can be a devastating and even fatal health condition. Diabetes poses an increasing burden on the nation's hospitals and clinics. The surge in diabetes threatens the very stability of Mexico's public health care system.

The Rotary Club of Tulum takes this health crisis seriously and we have been conducting diabetes screenings, clinics, and insulin access for several years now.

We recently embarked on a program with Doctors Nestor, Tomas, and Arturo in their Akumal Medical Center in the Akumal Pueblo.  We are providing them with blood glucose monitors and strips (donated by Tulum Rotary supporters) and they are testing the at-risk population in Akumal pueblo for FREE.  They are also providing free diabetes counseling.  This will allow us to positively impact the health of many more people in Akumal pueblo!  We're in the process of trying to create similar partnerships in Chemuyil and Tulum as well.  Consist testing and counseling is critical in effective diabetes management.

Can we count on you to help us with this on-going initiative?  One easy way is to bring test strips with you when you come to visit from the US or Canada.  The preferred brand is One Touch Ultra Strips or ReliOn Prime strips.
